A new format for bilateral cooperation
On her final official visit to the U.S: as Chancellor in July of 2021, Angela Merkel and President Joe Biden signed a joint declaration affirming “their commitment to close bilateral cooperation in promoting peace, security, and prosperity around the world.” The declaration also included a commitment to create a new bilateral forum to enable Germany and the U.S. to utilize their combined expertise and innovative power to help shape the global future. Defending democracy in a digital world HMKW Digital Journalism Master Students had the opportunity to observe and report on the proceedings. The first ever US-German Futures Forum was held in Münster, Germany, from November 03-04 2022. In cooperation with the Bertelsmann Stiftung, the U.S. Embassy Berlin, and the German Federal Foreign Office, HMKW Berlin students had the opportunity to cover the event. The conference, which brought together experts from civil society, technology and politics across the Atlantic, aimed to explore opportunities and challenges for developing better transatlantic relationships. Although the U.S. – German Futures Forum had strong female representation, the topic of gender equality was all but excluded from the two day conference.
